Context

The problem

Navigation is arguably the single most important aspect of any application as the users must be able to traverse the application to perform their tasks. In this context, navigation refers not to the global platform header, but to the in-app navigation for the consoles and services within the HPE GreenLake ecosystem.

Each console currently uses different patterns for in-app navigation. There is also significant inconsistency across the HPE GreenLake customer's end to end experience.

The solution

We collaborated closely with the UX Research team and engineers to create a documentation of guidelines, standards, and best practices for a more consistent navigation system. Additionally, we presented a full heuristic review with documentation and recommendations, use cases from various services, usability testing insights and feedback, and validated concepts. We also contributed to an updated Design System page for Navigation; this was used for consumption across all business units in the HPE GreenLake ecosystem.

The result

We tested our prototypes with Software & DevOps Engineers, resulting in a successful and significant decrease in the time it takes to navigate and perform tasks. We lowered cognitive load and increased overall customer satisfaction.
